Because size matters, the dimensions of both the molecule to be encapsulated and the channel diameter should be taken into consideration before taking the decision on which mesoporous host matrix should be employed.
However, when the targeted molecule is smaller than the pore diameter, the adsorption will take place in both the inner part of the mesopores and the external surface of the host matrix.
In this section only the physical adsorption of the molecules will be discussed, since it is the simplest method for loading molecules into mesoporous materials: the host matrix is suspended in an enzyme solution overnight and then the loaded com- posite is recovered by filtration or centrifugation.
A similar experiment was carried out with ordered mesoporous glasses to show that the size-selectivity effect was independent of the composition of the host matrix (Menaa et al. 2010).
The surface area of the host matrix is a very important parameter since the physical adsorption of a molecule is a surface phenomenon, in which only the molecules that are in contact with the silica wall will be retained.
